Does it matter if you work out in the morning Vversus the afternoon? I’ve always been told the morning was the best time to workout. It helps jump start your metabolism, helps you be more productive throughout the day, and it is the least likely time for you to be interrupted. Since college, I always made sure to start off the morning with a little sweat, but now that I am teaching I am finding it is REALLY hard to it first thing.
My “morning” used to be about 8 or 9. I would wake up, have a little breakfast, check e-mails, workout, shower, and go about my daily business. Now, morning is before the sun is up.
I’m NOT that kind of morning person, and I literally think “X amount of days until you can sleep in”. So despite all of the good warnings, I have started working out after work about 4p.m.
Is the Afternoon the Best Time to Workout?
-I’m awake and can push myself farther. If I’m tired from work, I use E&E to help me keep going.
-I’m not starving like I am first thing in the morning.
-Research has shown your muscles are more warmed up and limber than first thing in the morning.
-No extra shower (yes, I’m that gross person). I shower at night normally so my hair dries without blow drying it. If I work out in the morning, I have to take another shower. That’s wasteful, requires me to get up even earlier, and makes my skin dry.
-You have to be REALLY committed to it because of errands always pop up. I have to leave work on time, and if it’s a grocery day, it’s so tough to be motivated.
-Can make dinner harder to fix. After I work out, I shower, and then I’m hungry and want to eat RIGHT then. So I have started having a snack in between my workout and dinner, and I eat dinner later than my normal 5.
The best time to workout is the time you consistently have open to workout. Studies have shown working out first thing does not affect your calorie or fat burn significantly, and if working out first thing makes you cranky, there is no reason you’ll care about being productive.
For me, the best time for me to workout is the afternoon. Yes, I know Thursday’s are out every week because I go to the grocery store and spray tan that day, but I know that I need to really push to get in my workouts on the other days and plan around it.
