Dark chocolate has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, reduce clotting, and benefit overall heart health. – Joy Bauer
I follow the 90/10 diet every day. I know the 10% not only keeps me sane, but it also has some health benefits! Still, it seems like many “dieters” treat chocolate as an arch enemy. So while I totally condone eating a piece of deliciously unhealthy piece of birthday cake every now and then, dark chocolate can provide a healthy treat every day!
Chocolate Improves Blood Pressure & Heart Health:
You want a chocolate bar that has at least 70% cocoa in it to cash in on the health benefits. Lindt Excellence Extra Dark Chocolate has 85% Cocoa! It’s also really smooth and not as bitter as some dark chocolates.
If you do not like dark chocolate immediately, I suggest trying different brands. For example, there is a Trader Joe’s dark chocolate bar EVERYONE else loves, but I think it tastes like armpit. I like the Lindt and also dark chocolates with real fruit ground into it as well. I love blueberry and raspberry flavors.
So just play around and see which one you like the most–eating chocolate is always a fun experiment right?!
It does take a little while to adjust to the very rich, almost bitter taste; however, you get used to the flavor. I find myself grabbing something darker than a milk chocolate Hershey’s bar now because it is more satisfying. As small as 1 ounce is enough to satisfy a monster craving.
1 ounce is also a great portion as well. 1 ounce has about 150 calories which, as long as your budget your calories for it, won’t kill your diet.
Also, I just went a bit of a chocolate brown! I am hoping to get away from the blonde (at least until next summer) to see how my skin will look without a spray tan and not deal with roots! Dark hair would be less maintenance and that can make being a brunette more fun!
