Jake and Kim have both had their bouts with kidney stones in the past couple of years. They are painful and sometimes unavoidable, but sometimes you can prevent kidney stones through your diet (or at least limit them).
We had no clue what Jake had when he had his first kidney stone. That morning, he texted me saying he didn’t feel right, but he went to work. Then around 7pm, he said we needed to go to the emergency room. EEK!
The wait wasn’t too bad, and we got in pretty fast. Turns out he had kidney stones. They gave him some really good drugs and took a cat scan. His stones were small enough for him to pass (thank goodness! The alternative was crushing it with a sonic blast!)
Kidney stones are actually common in men, but anyone can get them.
Men’s chances of getting them increases 5-10% each year based on genetics. So I decided to do a little digging and see how to lower those odds!
5 Tips to Prevent Kidney Stones
1. Stay Hydrated — As a rule, you should divide your weight by 2 and aim for that number of ounces of water a day.
2. Don’t take a calcium supplement and limit calcium to 800mg a day for men.
3. Aim for foods with oxalate and fiber and low in sodium and sugar.
5. Skip the Cokes and sodas. (view the most recent study on the relation of sodas to stones).
So what’s a typical dinner look like on a NO-Kidney Stone Diet?
A leafy salad with a sweet potato and squash would be excellent! Want some protein with it? Try fish.
One surprising thing on preventing kidney stones…
Draft beer won’t increase your chances of a kidney stone because it is high in oxalate. You should always remember that you need to stay hydrated and the calories beer packs though. Limit yourself to 1 a day.
Have you ever had a kidney stone before? When was the last time you had to go to the ER?
On a lighter note, this all happened during Spring Break. I think every teacher should have enough time to regroup every 9 weeks. :P
My mom and I have been talking about painting our bathrooms forever. Right now they are a yucky, pale yellow color. Well, we had talked about it LAST spring break and never did it, so Tuesday we went and bought paint for my bathroom. I’m the guinea pig; after we tackle mine, my mom will decide it is worth (or pretty enough for) hers.
I chose the second orange from the top, and she chose the top purple. I really like both of them. I actually have the purple in my bedroom. I don’t know when we will start the project though. My aunt, the painter, said not to paint when it is raining due to the humidity, and it just won’t stop storming. Sunday would work, but we are going to see …..I bet you can guess it…….Hunger Games!
