Today I thought I would talk about a few of my favorite things; sunshine and food. Just a simple girl ;-)
I’m not sure about you all, but this winter was TOUGH. Freezing. Hopefully you were fortunate enough to not experience the lows we had in Philadelphia, but just in case you did (or had worse, Sorry Boston!!) then you know it just makes the summer feel that much sweeter. For the summer, there is one sure fire way that I love to squeeze in a few of my favorite things is by having a picnic!
Here are my 5 secrets to having the perfect healthy, summer picnic.
1. Find your spot!
First things first, decide your location. Whether its the beach, the park or maybe just your own backyard, pick place that you will comfortable and will want to hang out and relax. Ooh, and its always a good idea to double check if food or glassware are allowed in public parks ahead of time!
2. Pick a menu that fits your setting.
Okay, this is open ended. Honestly, most of the time when I set up a picnic its menu planning on the fly. I open up my fridge, grab a few veggies, slice up some cheese and meat, throw together a quick salad, wash some fruits and grab a loaf of fresh bread on the way…boom! Best picnic, healthy, easy and good to go. Maybe if I’m real wild I’ll grab a bottle of something yummy…everything in moderation, right? ;-)
3. Be creative and healthy with your transportation.
I love, love to incorporate some healthy physical activity prior to the picnic. Maybe its riding your bike to the park or walking to the beach, whatever it is try to think of a way to start the picnic healthy. Even if its just a picnic in your backyard, incorporate a walk around the block before sitting down for the feast!
4. Share the wealth.
The best thing about having a picnic is that it can be as put together as you like..is it a casual shoeless hang out or a fancy, grassy soiree? Your choice! Typically, I choose casual and easy, breezy. In the theme of easy, typically when my fiance and I decide to pack up our basket and head to picnic spot we will send out a few texts to nearby friends….just in case they are looking for some fun! Not only is it the best way to have a potluck picnic, but you also get to enjoy some time with friends. Who can go wrong?
5. Don’t forget to pack the fun!
Andd, that brings to my last point…just remember, the whole goal of the picnic is to have fun and enjoy the summer weather. Maybe its picking a place that you set up a badminton court or a spot that you can pump up your music and enjoy conversation with friends. Whatever it may be just remember the goal is to have fun! After all, one key ingredient in a healthy lifestyle is being happy :-)
