My Function Health Review

After debating on Function Health’s 160+ lab tests for months, I decided to invest in it.

This Function Health review is not sponsored or medical advice. I’m just sharing my own experience and why I chose it.

A little bit about me

I’m 55. I’m generally pretty healthy with my habits. Strength training and yoga are my favorite types of exercise, and while I love a slice of pizza occasionally, I eat pretty healthy. I also am dealing with Crohn’s and am working with a functional health coach to get my inflammation under control.

I chose Function Health for a variety of reasons which I’ll share below!

Who is Function Health For?

Function Health is a great option if:

  • You feel “off” but labs are “normal”
  • You’ve invested in supplements but don’t know what’s working
  • You want deeper insights into your health for a proactive approach

Why I Chose Function Health

I chose Function Health’s testing for a few reasons:

  1. I’m self employed and getting my normal bloodwork done can cost into the $1,000s.
  2. I’ve been diagnosed with Crohn’s, and I like to be able to track my C-Reactive, as well as, a few other blood markers.
  3. I have been working with a functional health coach for 5 months, and I want to see how I am doing since implementing his action plan.
  4. The testing is through Quest Diagnostics which is a legitimate lab.
  5. When you purchase Function Health, it includes 2 blood draws so you can see your base line and then go again in 6 months to see any trends or changes you’ve had.

Spoiler alert: After going through the process myself, I’d do it again…especially at the current price point.

It used to be $499, but now it’s $365! Plus you can get $25 off with my link!

Is Function Health Legit?

Yes, Function Health is a legitimate company founded by well-known experts including Dr. Mark Hyman.

They offer comprehensive lab testing including 160+ biomarkers through Quest Diagnostics. Quest Diagnostics is the same lab many primary care doctors already use.

Along with the basic bloodwork a primary care physician would run, you also get advanced lab tests.

What doctor is behind Function health?

Mark Hyman is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Function Health. He’s also a board-certified physician and one of the leading voices in functional medicine.

Before Function Health, he founded and led The UltraWellness Center and served as the Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine.

He’s known for bridging the gap between traditional medicine and a more root-cause approach… looking at things like nutrition, lifestyle, and inflammation instead of just managing symptoms.

He’s also a New York Times bestselling author, with books focused on metabolism, chronic disease, and why so many people feel “off” even when their labs come back “normal.”

Data Points from Function Health Testing

Test Accuracy And Reliability

As mentioned above, Function Health uses Quest Diagnostics for their lab testing which I appreciate.

I was able to go to a local Quest lab to have my blood draw. They took 13 vials of blood for the all of the testing, as well as, an urine sample.

It’s important to fast before your testing for accuracy as well.

What does Function Health check?

Typical bloodwork ran at a physical is about 20-30 labs. Function Health is a personalize health testing platform that tests over 100 biomarkers to give you a snapshot of your overall health.

The Core Categories

Function Health’s lab tests can feel a little like information overload, but in a good way.

It includes numerous categories including heart health, thyroid, liver, kidney, pancreatic health, cancer detection, autoimmunity, immune regulation, female/male health, metabolic health, nutrients, and stress.

You can also add on additional testing if you want. I didn’t.

Heart Health

The heart panel evaluates the types of cholesterol-containing particles (lipoproteins) in your blood that are associated with the risk of coronary heart disease.

It includes 15 biomarkers including HDL Large, High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP), LDL Pattern, LDL Peak Size, LDL Small, Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), HDL-Cholesterol, LDL Medium, LDL Particle Number, LDL-Cholesterol, Lipoprotein (a), Non-HDL Cholesterol, Total Cholesterol /HDL Ratio, and Triglycerides.

Metabolic Health

The initial test and follow up test includes both HbA1c and fasting insulin, which is important because elevated fasting insulin can be present for years before signs of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes show up in standard tests, which often only test for glucose.

Hormones & Fertility

Function tests major fertility hormones such as FSH, LH, and testosterone in both men and women. This can be helpful if you’re dealing with perimenopause symptoms.

Thyroid, Liver & Kidneys

Organs that quietly underperform long before symptoms appear.

Nutrients

The testing also includes testing for key nutrients like vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and magnesium.

These nutrients that directly impact memory, focus, mood, and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Other Testing & Insights

  • Autoimmune Antibodies
  • Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) – an add-on test for a biomarker tied to risk of Alzheimer’s.
  • Cancer Test – an add-on test that can detect cancer signals across 50+ types as early as Stage 1.
  • Heavy Metals & Toxins — Environmental exposure markers most doctors never order.
  • Biological Age – you’ll be given a biological age based on your results as well. This is included with the general testing.

Why do all of this testing?

160+ tests is a lot, but the idea is that your biomarkers offer measurable signals in your body. These signals can help you take action before you start feeling bad or worse.

With that said, I suggest not obsessing over every marker. Instead, focus on your trends and use those to guide your decisions before re-testing.

How long does it take to get your results?

The site says it can take 4 weeks to get your test results, but I received the majority of them within a few days.

This of course can vary with demand, and I am still waiting on the results from about 40 blood tests (out of the 160). It’s been 1 week since my initial blood draw.

Is Function Health reliable?

Yes, the company and lab are both well-known and reputable, and you have easy access to your test results on their Function Health Portal app or website.

The dashboard is easy to use, too!

Does Function Health replace a doctor?

No, Function Health can’t replace your doctor. It’s purely a lab testing service that runs comprehensive tests to help you better understand your health data. You’ll want to take that information to your healthcare providers to then receive the proper medical care.

Can you use insurance?

No, but I found that this was much cheaper than having this many blood panels ran through my insurance. You can also use FSA/HSA to purchase Function Health.

How often should you test?

They recommend you do your initial test and the do the follow-up tests in 6 months.

Pros And Cons Of Using Function Health

I only have positive feedback so far. It was really easy to schedule my blood draw, and I was seen promptly when I arrived. I love how the personalized health testing platform is set up. it’s easy to review my information.

My functional health coach was also very impressed with what they tested – especially when it came to my thyroid panel.

The only con I can think of is that you still have to go to a primary care doctor for medical treatment, but that is going to be with any bloodwork.

I love that this was convenient, in-depth, easy to read and understand, and the AI-chat option within the platform is great for any questions I had.

It was also very affordable.

Is there a better option than Function Health?

There are other testing options coming out, but when I was researching, Function Health was by far the most comprehensive and reliable. They also have a lot of financial backing and are well known which allows them to be able to offer more than smaller companies in my opinion.

Screenshot of the Function Health Personalized Protocols Overview

What do you do with your results?

The Function Health Dashboard will explain all of your biomarkers, and then you can take it to your doctor or functional coach.

The dashboard also includes Peronalized Protocols you can dig into. It includes options for supplements, better sleep, foods to focus on and avoid, stress and anxiety relief, workout routines, and more.

All of them are based on your test results and history, but of course, you’ll want to talk to a medical professional about it all too.

I was able to send my results my coach the same day I received them, and he’s now creating me a new protocol.

Final Thoughts

Function Health is a great option for so many people – including myself! It was convenient, reliable, and very insightful.

If you’ve been thinking about getting deeper answers about your health this is one of the most comprehensive options I’ve found.
