3 Ingredient Paleo Pita Bread

Simply made from plantains and egg whites, the 3 Ingredient Paleo Pita Bread is low-fat, high in protein, and has a cake like texture that’s hard to beat. Easy to make, delicious to eat!

Do you have certain recipes in your head that are so easy, so familiar that you don’t even need to write them down anymore? Staples that you make weekly or monthly that seem so simple that they’re not even worth sharing?

In the past, I’ve called these ‘common sense‘ recipes. But what I’ve learned is that not everyone is as comfortable in the kitchen as I am. I grew up in a home where helping my mom in the kitchen was encouraged.

She taught me cooking techniques, how to follow recipes, and inspired me to start experimenting on my own. Not everyone was so lucky to have that luxury as a child, however. So I have to admit I’ve taken my love of cooking and familiarity with making food from scratch for granted.

So simple recipes aren’t silly! In fact, they’re great for beginners!

Let’s be honest, most people don’t have a lot of time to prepare elaborate, intensive recipes anyways. The simpler, the less ingredients, the easier to throw together….THE BETTER.

Bonus points if the recipe is healthy!

Well, the recipe I have to share today checks all of those boxes and more!

Paleo Pita Bread

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to share this recipe. I have really been holding out on you since I’ve been making these 3 Ingredient Paleo Pita Breads FOREVER.

A lot of you have even asked about them on Instagram, and I always said I’d share them on the blog eventually.

Well, today is the day! As you can tell from the name, they have minimal ingredients, are totally paleo friendly, and taste amazing! They’re also grain-free (so obviously gluten-free, as well!), high in protein, and have the most delicious, cake-like texture from using a special ingredient….PLANTAINS. AKA: The Paleo Wonderfood!

Paleo Pita Bread

I swear everyone who is on the Paleo diet seems to be obsessed with plantains. No judgement though…you know my obsession with kabocha! ;)

  • 2 medium green plantains (approx. 350 grams)

  1. Preheat oven to 400. Slice plantains into chunks. Place allingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth. Place parchment paper on bakingsheet and spoon batter into 10 equally sized circles (you will need more than one cookiesheet). Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack. Store in thefreezer and thaw before using.

As I mentioned above, these Paleo pitas are a total staple in my house!

3 Ingredient Paleo Pitas

A few times a month I do a big ‘freezer food-prep’ in which I make a ton of baked goods, breads (including these pitas), protein options, and other random stuff to restock my freezer stash. I love having meal/snack components already made up and on hand for when I am super busy and don’t really have time to cook. Doing it all at one time a few times a month makes healthy eating a no brainer!

These pita breads pretty much suit everyone’s needs! They’re great for most people no matter what diet you follow and they’re so versatile.

Some of my favorite ways to use them include…

  • spreading with peanut butter and blueberry jam
  • topping with goat’s milk cream cheese and jelly
  • dipping in black bean humus and salsa
  • stuffing with raw tempeh and pesto (strange but good!)
  • toasting and eating with a sprinkle of cinnamon (they are THAT good on their own!)

I’d love to hear what you all come up with when you try these out!

  1. These look amazing!! I can’t believe these cute little pita pockets are g.free, paleo and only 3 ingredients! That’s amazing! Thanks for the recipe. I need to get some plantains!!

  2. These look so good! I’m excited at the small ingredient list!! I’ve pinned this to try later. Hubby would be pretty happy if we could make our own pitas. We just love to use them for small pizzas! :)

  3. These look fab but I don’t think plantains are very easy to come by where I live in Devon :(

  4. These are interesting and do taste good with the cinnamon. I added a splash of vanilla too as I intend to toast them and eat with nut butters.

BUT! You must spray some non-stick spray on your parchment paper. I’m struggling with a bench scraper, trying to salvage as much as I can. These are GLUED to the paper!

  5. These look delicious! I’m relatively new to paleo, and just trying to learn the ropes to incorporate into my family’s diet. Liquid egg whites? Is that something other than separating eggs…and sounds like a lot of eggs? Thank you. Looking forward to exploring more of your recipes :)

    1. You can find just the egg whites in carton over by the cartons of eggs :) It’s a quick easy option :)

  6. Hi! Just discovering your blog and love this recipe! And HAVE TO TRY THESE! I don’t have plantains though! Can I sub apple sauce or pumpkin?

    1. This was a guest post from another blogger so I’m not 100% sure, but I would assume you could. Maybe google substitute plantains for…and try it :) We use apple sauce a lot! :)

  7. I think my 2nd batch of these will be better. 400 degrees was a little too warm for my oven. Mine were a little too brown, even when I checked them around 12 minutes.

I also made my first set a wee bit too small. Once I get past the learning curve, I think they will be great.

One question — how big do you make your circles and how thick do you put the batter on the parchment paper. My first set was too thick. My second set was too thin.

    1. Hey Debbie!
I actually didn’t make the recipe, a friend – Kaila – did. So I asked her about the circles! :) Here is her answer:

She can definitely lower the temp to 375 (every oven is different). I haven’t made these in forever but I would say the circles are about 4-5 inches in diameter. I would spread the batter evenly so they are about 1/4 inch thick (a little thicker than that is fine.

You can also email her at kaila@healthyhelperkaila.com if the 4-5 inch and 1/4 inch thick doesn’t work out perfectly – but I think it should!
