Why should you use a natural, non-toxic body wash?

Natural body washes are generally more gentle on the skin because they are free of harsh chemicals including sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances.

They also are likely to contain ingredients like coconut oil or olive oil that help nourish the skin and maintain your skin’s natural PH level.

Since you likely use a body wash everyday, it’s important to use a non-toxic one to also help keep your exposure to toxins down.

If you have sensitive skin, a natural body wash, gel, or bar soap can help you avoid any skin irritation as well.

Harsh Ingredients to Avoid

When searching for a natural body wash, you should avoid:

  • triclosan, which is a a known antibacterial agent,
  • sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS),
  • sodium laureth sulfate (SLES),
  • parabens,
  • phthalates,
  • formaldehyde,
  • and synthetic or artificial fragrances.

How do you know if a body wash is natural?

The best way to know if a body wash is natural and non-toxic is by looking at the ingredients. You want to avoid any lab-made chemicals in your products.

3 Resources to Help You Identify Natural Products

INCI Decoder, Environmental Working Group (EWG), and the YUKA app are great for deciphering product labels and ingredients.

We like to enter a product into all three sites to see how “clean” it is.

Is natural soap better than body wash?

Whether you prefer a bar soap, shower gel, or body wash, you will need to read the ingredients and check for harsh chemicals.

What is the best natural body wash?

We compared 3 popular brands’ body washes: Mrs. Meyer’s, JASON, and Attitude. The price for all 3 were very comparable.

Below is how they ranked.

Mrs Meyers Natural Body Wash

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Body Wash

This is actually the natural body wash we started using years ago! The ingredient list still looked long though. That’s why we decided to keep digging to see if it really was the best natural body wash for us.

We chose the lavender scented body gel.

INCI Decoder, EWG and YUKA Ratings:

INCI Decoder found 3 potentially irritating ingredients in Mrs. Meyer’s body wash. The 3 bad ingredients related to fragrance and include: lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (Orange) peel oil, and fragrance.

The EWG didn’t have the lavender scent ranked, but they did rank the body wash in another scent.

Mrs. Meyer’s was ranked it a 4 out of 10 which means it could have potentially harmful ingredients.

The ingredients in question were benzyl salicylate, D-limonene, linalool, sodium benzoate, and fragrance.

YUKA actually scored this the highest out of all 3 body washes. It received an excellent score of 86/100.

Price: $8.99 for 16 fl oz

Review:

Out of all 3 body washes, Mrs. Meyer’s is still our favorite. It has more scent than Attitude, but it’s not overpowering.

It lathers well, and it leaves our skin feeling clean without feeling stripped or dry.

Water, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate, glycerin, sodium laurylglucosides hydroxypropylsulfonate, sodium cocoamphoacetate, linum usitatissimum (linseed) seed oil, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, fragrance, decyl glucoside, disodium 2-sulfolaurate, citric acid, sodium chloride, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate.

INCI Decoder, EWG and YUKA Ratings:

INCI Decoder listed 5 potentially “icky” ingredients: citral, eugenol, fragrance, limonene, and linalool. These are all fragrance ingredients.

The EWG ranked it a 4 out of 10 which means it could have potentially harmful ingredients.

The ingredients in question were tocopheryl acetate, lecithin, linalool, benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate, citral, eugenol, and fragrance.

The fragrance is frustrating because they could have used essential oils, but they didn’t.

YUKA scored it as good (51/100).

Price: $6.49 for 16 fl oz

Review:

Out of all 3 body washes, JASON’s was by far the strongest smell. It smells pretty good, but it’s a little overpowering.

It lathers well, and we didn’t see any skin irritation from it.

INCI Decoder, EWG and YUKA Ratings:

Attitude is EWG verified, and INCI Decoder found no issues with any of the ingredients. YUKA did not have this specific shower gel listed, but other Attitude body washes were given an excellent score (79/100)!

Price: $10.29 for 16 fl oz

Review:

We love the ingredients in Attitude’s natural body wash. The chamomile smells great, and it isn’t overpowering.

It lathers well, but it doesn’t have as many bubbles as Mrs. Meyers or Jason’s body gel.

It caused no skin irritation, and it didn’t leave our skin feeling stripped or dry.

Attitude’s Ingredients:

Aqua / water / eau, sodium coco-sulfate, coco-glucoside, glycerin, sodium cocoyl isethionate, citric acid, sodium chloride, glyceryl oleate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, avena sativa (oat / avoine) kernel extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, cyamopsis tetragonoloba (guar) gum, triethyl citrate, linalyl acetate (floral), geranyl acetate (floral).

SHOP THE ATTITUDE BODY WASH FRAGRANCES (INCLUDING UNSCENTED)

What is the best natural body wash?

Attitude’s Sensitive Skin Shower Gel is the best natural body wash because of it’s gentle formula with limited, clean ingredients.

While we chose the chamomile variety, they also offer a fragrance-free option.

With that said, we really wish Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Body Wash would have been the cleanest because it has the perfect level of scent in our opinion.  We wish they could have used natural fragrance. Also, while all 3 lathered well, Mrs. Meyer’s had the best consistency.

Moisture & Skin Barrier

While none of these 3 shower gel brands felt like they stripped our skin barrier, we wouldn’t call any of them a hydrating body wash.

We ended up applying almond oil on wet skin or body lotion after drying off, but we always use lotion after even traditional body washes.

We’ve not compared all of these natural body wash brands or their varieties, but here are a few more options you may like:
