What does “words of affirmation” mean?
The definition for the love language, words of affirmation, is verbal compliments and words of appreciation. This may be words of encouragement, compliments, or praise.
These ideas should be genuine and from the heart.
They may come in the form of:
- face to face communication
- a text
- a card
- an email
- a short love letter
- compliments in front of others
If your spouse love language is words of affirmation, they will feel appreciated and loved when you share these types of sentiments with them. They also will take insults harder than others.
Would you like to save this?
We hope our examples of words of affirmation will help you get started and bring you and your spouse closer.
Do you also need personal affirmations?
In order to be able to encourage and love on others, we also have to love and take care of ourselves.
You may benefit from using personal affirmations as well! Using affirmations can help you boost your own confidence, get out of your comfort zone and even feel more calm.
What Are The Other Love Languages?
The 5 Love Languages book theorizes that each person communicates and feels love through 5 different languages.
Most of the time couples don’t speak and feel love in the same language which can result in frustration and hurt the relationship. So it’s important to know the 5 love languages, as well as, your and your spouse’s language of choice.
The 5 Love Languages are: physical touch, quality time, gifts, acts of service and words of affirmation.
Physical touch could be holding hands, hugging, touching the other’s shoulder as you walk by, etc. It doesn’t relate to sex.
Quality time and gifts are pretty self explanatory except that a gift could be something free like a post it saying I love you or a picked flower from the yard.
Acts of service usually relates to chores like cooking dinner or taking the car in for maintenance.
For this post, we’ll be digging into the last love language listed: words of affirmation.

Thank you for this post! A great reminder to keep our spouses top of mind and encouragement.
Love this! I definitely needed examples because sometimes I say the same old types of things to my hubby. It can be hard to remember to practice handing out words of affirmation, but I can always tell it makes a huge difference when I do!
My husband’s love language is GIFTS. Words don’t matter to him because he has asperger’s – ha, so he doesn’t really understand them, but gifts, HEEEEEEE UNDERSTANDS THOSE! lol!
