While we love our home gym, the space is pretty limited. That’s why we set out to find the best adjustable dumbbells out there!

Best Adjustable Dumbbells Comparison

Depending on your space, you may decide on a dumbbell rack or a set of adjustable dumbbells.

best dumbbells to use at home

Whichever you choose, we recommend ordering from Amazon or somewhere else that offers free shipping!

It’s so much easier than picking them up yourself! They also tend to be the best price around too!

We’ll look at 2 dumbbell set options, and then the 2 adjustable weight options.

2 Dumbbell Set Options

Small Dumbbell Set

Your first option would be to do a set of dumbbells.

This set keeps all of the weights organized, and it’s a space saver since it’s vertical.

This particular set goes from 5 to 25 lbs.

You get a pair of: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 lbs dumbbells.

These weight sizes are great for women or moderately lifting. Even when we’re lifting heavy weights, we typically stay at 25lbs even on leg days.

Could we go heavier?

Probably – but as a beginner to intermediate exerciser these would be a great option!

Which are the Best Adjustable Dumbbells?

Maybe the dumbbell sets are still too big or too pricey for what you need.

For us – we needed something heavy, compact and under $500. The adjustable dumbbells were a no-brainer.

There are so many brands out there now though – it’s hard to know which ones are worth the price tag.

The main thing we’ve learned is that the lower quality weights will jam. So it’s best to invest in a good set.

We’ll look at the 2 best adjustable dumbbell brand below – Bowflex and PowerBlocks.

With that said, we’ve both had a set of Bowflex Selecttech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells for years. One set is over 12 years old and the other over 5 years old.

The Best Adjustable Dumbbells that go to 100lbs are the:

They are the same as the ones above, but they go from 10 to 90lbs.

With either choice – Bowflex includes a 2 year warranty on the parts and plates.

PowerBlock Elite Dumbbells

Another Popular Brand is Elite Power Blocks

Like the Bowflex Selecttech dumbbells, you’ll be able to dial in what weight you want. This set goes from 5 to 50lbs.

So they are 2.5lbs lighter than the 552 Selecttechs, and the way to choose your weight is a little different.

The Bowflex weights have a dial on either end, and these have almost like a plate you slide in at the correct weight amount.

While the weight is a little less, you get more variety with this set.

You’ll be able to adjust to get a set of weights at: 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5, 35, 37.5, 40, 42.5, 45, 47.5 and 50 lbs per hand.

Pros and Cons of Adjustable Weights vs a Set

The pros and cons are very similar for Selecttech and the Power Blocks.

Pros

  • Sleek and space efficient
  • Easily adjust to different weights
  • Both brands are sturdy and durable.
  • Both have great reviews on Amazon.
  • Bowflex includes a 2 year warranty on the parts and plates.
  • Elite Power Blocks come with a 10-year limited warranty.

Cons

  • If you’re switching weights between sets quickly, adjusting isn’t as easy as having individual dumbbells.
  • They can be bulky for some moves.
  • If you’re used to just dropping weights, you can’t with these. It will damage the plastic.

The Best Adjustable Dumbbells for Us Were….

The Bowflex Selecttech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells!

While we loved that Power Blocks offered a 10 year warranty, we felt the other benefits of Bowflex outweighed it.

We love the dialing-feature to select our weights versus the plate option on the power blocks.

Another reason we chose the Selecttech dumbbells was because we use a 5lb weight more than a 2.5lb one (Power Block’s lowest weight). This isn’t a huge deal because you could find a set of 5lb weights pretty cheap, but it’s just more convenient to only have 1 thing sitting out.
