Nearly 5 years after our first Whole 30, people will still ask us about paleo and Keto-type diets. While we personally do best on a 80/20 meal plan, we totally understand needing a kickstart in your nutrition. So we’ve put together a list of our favorite homemade and store-bought Whole 30 snacks!

First off:: this post has been edited possibly more than any post we’ve made.

So before we dig into our favorite Whole 30 Snacks, let’s dig into each rule & recommendation clearly.

Whole30 Rules

During your Whole 30, you cannot consume any:

  • added sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • alcohol
  • grains
  • legumes
  • or dairy

The people at It Starts With Food are very strict on this.

Another rule that is “not as black-and-white” is recreating certain foods.

These foods would include:

  • bread-like products
  • breakfast treats
  • baked treats (cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc)
  • junk food

Whole 30 Snack Recommendations

Depending on how strict you want to be in your Whole30, you may choose snacks like:

  • Eggs
  • Fruit
  • Nuts (not peanuts)

These foods will maximize your results because they’re “Whole” foods.

With that said, Whole30 has said,

You are free to eat seven meals a day of Rx Bars and sugar-free bacon with a side of non-organic blueberry/strawberry/banana smoothie and you’d still be doing the Whole30 with 100% compliance. (source)

About Kim and Kalee Sorey

Our Thoughts on Snacking

We believe in balance and moderation in everything. So even during the Whole 30, we believe in a mixture of snacks including, but not limited to, fresh fruit, RX Bars and eggs.

Plus – technically, you shouldn’t even snack on anything.

If you’re not all about our RX Bars, Love and Happiness mentality, we get it. It’s not for everyone.

With that said, if you’re more Bootcamp than Barbie, It Starts with Food actually says you should only have 3 meals per day (no snacks).

The only exception would be a pre- and post- workout meal that also fits within the guidelines above.

Now, they do say you can snack if you have a long day, are a kid, or a pregnant/nursing mother.

They also go onto say:

The success of your Whole30 likely isn’t riding on whether or not you have a mini-meal a few afternoons.

“Better Choice” Store Bought Snacks

If you’re looking at store-brand options, you may find yourself at the crossroads.

Are you going 100% all-in or are you allowing yourself those RX Bars?

We suggest aiming to get in fresh snacks 80% of the time. However, we know – you’re human.

You may be a mom, busy professional, travel, or maybe all 3! So we wanted to provide on the go snacks as well.

Check Nutrition labels

We always suggest checking the labels of store bought items. With that said, Amazon shows the ingredients on each of the ones listed below.

These may be Whole 30 compliant or close to compliant…so make sure to read the labels if you’re going all in.

Approved Whole 30 Snacks

These snacks are actually approved by the Whole 30 Creators.

Other Snack Options

The snacks below are not endorsed by Whole 30.

A lot of the times the two diets will overlap; however, Whole 30 snacks are going to be more limited overall than a keto diet.

  1. I see you’ve modified your post to remove the mug cake and cheese. The herb and beet crackers which are more than ‘dried up vegetables’ are also not allowed under the ‘recreating baked goods and what I was referring to with the chips is the extensive list of store bought chips (banana chips, cookie crisps etc) in the last part of the post.
You’re welcome to contact me directly via my email if there is some confusion around the rules but I appreciate your willingness to modify the post.
Kale chips, banana chips, apple chips, plantain chips etc… are all fine if people are making them at home but commercially prepared ‘chips’ of any kind are out.

    1. Thank you for your knowledge and help Darcy. We definitely want to be helpful versus harmful. We’ve updated the store bought list to be label-based as well. We will continue to work on this post. We hope you approve of the new changes, and we plan on rewriting the whole thing next week. Thanks again!
