Finding the right supplements is a tedious and frustrating process. We’ve been using Beachbody performance supplements for a few months.
We wanted to share what we’ve found. We definitely have some favorites and least favorites.
But that’s not all!
We’ll also dig into the FAQs and pricing on the performance line.
We were attracted to the Beachbody Performance Supplements because:
- it’s so simple to use and follow as a system
- contains no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives
- it helps with energy and focus
- NSF certified meaning it’s has undergone and more tests than other supplements
- it lessens muscle soreness after a workout
We were both so tired of being sore from our workouts. We were eating right, taking a Cellucor BCAA supplement, stretching – and we were still walking funny days after leg day.
So if something could make stairs easier and give us better results in our workouts – why not try it?
Our Beachbody Performance Supplements Review
While we’ll outline the whole line, we only use Energize and Recover daily. We also mix in Recharge on strength days.
We’ve tried samples of each and researched them before buying, but really Energize and Recover made the most sense for us. We aren’t lifting super heavy to need Recharge or Creatine. We also don’t do long cardio programs (over an hour) where we’d need to Hydrate.
So you may find that 1 or 2 products from Beachbody performance supplements work best for you.

These supplements work for any exercise program – not just Beachbody workouts.
I have friends that use Hydrate for dirt bike racing and another that uses Energize before her Orange Theory class.
Performance Line Details
Out of the 5 supplements, we’ll look at, Energize and Hydrate are the only two vegan-friendly options. They aren’t certified vegan, but they don’t contain any animal products. They also weren’t processed using animal products according to Beachbody. The NSF also does unannounced checks to check ingredients.
Energize – Your Pre-Workout Supplement
Energize is our favorite. It really helps us push harder during a workout without feeling jittery or sick. You may feel a little tingle from it from the beta-alanine in it.
The ingredients in it are fewer than other pre-workout supplements which we like. While we aren’t chemists, we figure the fewer the better. The 3 key ingredients are beta-alanine, low-dose caffeine, and quercetin.
Beta-alanine is an amino acid that helps reduce lactic acid buildup in your muscles. The caffeine helps your focus and reaction time. Quercetin is a phytonutrient that helps with endurance and muscle fatigue.
Directions
Mix 1-2 scoops with 8-16oz water, shake and drink 30 minutes before your workout.
Taste & Flavors
Flavors:
- Mixed Berry
- Lemon
- Tropical Punch
It tastes better than other pre-workout supplements we’ve tried. Out of the flavors, Tropical Punch is our favorite.
Benefits
- increases energy and endurance
- helps your focus and reaction time
- allows you to do more – more reps, get deeper, run faster, etc.
- delays exercise-induced muscle fatigue

Hydrate – During a Long Workout
This is great for athletes, long-distance bikers or runners, or anyone staying at a high level of activity for a long period of time. It helps replace electrolytes during your workout, and that also helps give your muscles what they need to improve your endurance.
This citrus drink is supposed to be the ideal balance of carbohydrates, water, and electrolytes in an optimal concentration for better absorption.
This contains a blend of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium so your energy can stay up and you can feel better during a tough workout.
It also has quercetin and natural sugars from low-carb options.
Directions
Mix a scoop, shake and drink during your workout.
Taste
It’s a light citrus flavor. Some reviews say it sits lighter than water, but really it just tastes good to me.
It’s not bitter, but it’s not overly sweet either.
Benefits
- helps you stay hydrated during a workout
- hydration helps you feel better in a workout
- boosts endurance.
- replaces electrolytes lost during exercise

Recover – Post Workout
This is the one I’m giddy to talk about! It has helped our muscle soreness more than other protein drinks (and we’ve tried a bunch!). The only place we disagree is on flavors – I prefer orange, and she prefers chocolate.
It’s designed to help with muscle recovery, reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness, and speed up the return of normal muscle function.
It also promotes lean muscle synthesis to give your muscles what they need to grow and recover which reduces muscle soreness. So you’ll continue to see it work as you continue to workout and get stronger.
It contains pomegranate extract, protein and branch-chain amino acids (BCAAs). It’s also the ideal ratio of amino acids to support rebuilding the muscles.
Directions
1 scoop within 30 minutes after your workout
Taste
This is the best tasting supplement out of the line. It comes in orange and chocolate. It’s smooth and creamy.
Benefits
- shortens recovery time of muscles
- reduces exercise-induced muscle soreness
- promote lean muscle growth
- reduces muscle breakdown

Recharge – Take at Bedtime
Recharge is your bedtime nightcap. It helps to repair your muscles and reduce muscle breakdown. Even if you aren’t actively lifting weights – your muscles do get used every day and can start to break down. So even if you are doing a cardio or low-impact program, Recharge can be a great addition to your supplements. It tastes like vanilla.
Would you like to save this?
It contains tart cherry to help with soreness. Also, the slow-release micellar casein and BCAAs in it help to support overnight recovery and build stronger muscle mass.
Directions
1 hour before bed
Taste
It’s vanilla flavored and tastes good. It does take a little more shaking to become smooth like the Recover. It’s not chunky or gritty though.
It’s a tad sweeter than the rest; maybe it’s the cherry in it?
Benefits
- helps muscle recovery
- reduces exercise-induced muscle soreness & breakdown
- promotes lean muscle growth

Other Supplements
Creatine
The last product from the performance line is creatine. It’s is flavorless and an add-on to your Recover supplement.
It doesn’t overly bloat you like other brands, and it can help with resistance training and high-intensity interval workouts.

We also use a couple other supplements outside of our workouts:

Beachbody Performance Supplements Line FAQ
1. Are these supplements going to bulk me up?
We are sure people will have their own thoughts, but in short – no. Even with the supplements promoting lean muscle mass, your aren’t going to beef up. You’ll build lean muscle which speeds up the metabolism – making you leaner.
Also, if you are looking to increase your cardio workouts, these supplements can help your endurance. On the other hand, if you are lifting heavy weights, you’ll see the lean muscle and have less muscle soreness.
On the other hand, if you are lifting heavy weights, you’ll see the lean muscle and have less muscle soreness.
Basically, all 5 supplements feed the body right. We’ve had more energy for our daily workout, heightened endurance, and less muscle soreness.
2. Should I only use this with heavy strength training?
These work so well with any workout. You can do the whole line or choose the ones that benefits match your goals the best.
3. Can I still do Shakeology?
Yes! Shakeology is more of a whole foods meal replacement versus a traditional supplement to fuel a workout. (Check out our Shakeology review here)
You just don’t want to mix in your Shakeology with the other supplements for max results. For example, you can do Shakeology for breakfast, Energize and Rehydrate before and during your workouts, and the Recover after your workout.
4. Is it really going to make a difference?
I really wish we had taken pictures a couple of months ago. We both just kept putting it off. We can both see a change in our upper body.
If you try it and don’t see a difference, you can ship it back EMPTY for a refund too.
5. How do they taste without sweeteners?
Not bad! Seriously! We tried a Sucralose-Free BCAA supplement for during your workout, and it seriously tasted like puke. So we were less than excited about the taste, but honestly – all of them taste good.
6. What workouts require workout supplements?
Workout supplements are always optional. You’re still going to see results if you’re working out and eating right. With that said, supplements can simplify your meal prep, help you push harder, reduce your muscle soreness, and even enhance your results. So why not invest in them?
We use Energize for almost every workout – whether it’s something intense and long like 80 Day Obsession or something short and challenging like the 21 Day Fix or Transform 20.
We also use Recover anytime we lift weights. I know it and Recharge really helped our LIIFT4 Results especially! You may also like Creatine for building muscle mass.
You may also want Hydrate for longer cardio workouts like Turbo Fire or Insanity.
7. Why are they $50 or more?
If you bundle all 4, you pay $50 for each. It can be a lot to invest at first, but after visiting a local supplement shop – $50 a piece was actually cheaper than their non-NSF products.
Plus, each line they carried wasn’t a full system. So I was going to have to create a Frankenstein type of system that was just as much if not more.
But it’s an MLM company.
Beachbody is, in fact, an MLM. We knew it going in. We’re both coaches. But don’t you think an MLM has a stricter guideline and reputation to protect than some random brand you pick up at GNC?
I think some have a program with the MLM setup, but the products shouldn’t be justified one way or another on that factor alone. I suggest looking at the products, trying them and deciding for yourself.
Some also have said – the Performance Line costs more because of the MLM structure. I haven’t found this to be true when comparing similar brands. They are competitive with other high-quality ingredient brands.
So again – If you’ve made it this far, don’t like a brand throw you off.

where can i find that cup?
Are the pre/post workout performance supplements something that can be put into a smoothie?
Absolutely! The pre-workout is a stronger flavor so I usually do it on its own, but I mix in the post workout supplement into smoothies all the time! :) You could do both though!
Hi, which product would you recommend for someone who has fibromyalgia and can not afford to buy lots of products?
Hi Dany,
The products are considered “cleaner” than a lot of other workout supplements and has earned the label of “Informed Sport Certified”. Here are the details of the certification. With that said, none of the products are specifically geared to fibromyalgia, and there are no tests around using them and fibromyalgia to our knowledge. You could always try the sampler to see how you do with them before buying a bigger size, and all of the supplements also include a 30 day money-back guarantee.
Since the chocolate (plant based) recover has cocoa, in it, does it also contain caffeine? Can you comment on how much caffeine would be in a scoop? Thanks!
I don’t believe it has any caffeine. Here’s the nutritional label as well: https://res.cloudinary.com/teambeachbody/raw/upload/v1554505145/Teambeachbody/shared_assets/Shop/Nutrition/Beachbody%20Performance/Beachbody-Performance-Recover/Benefits/Ingredients/bbp-ing-recover-choc-veg-20srv-en-us-040319.pdf
Thanks for the fast reply. I know they haven’t added any additional caffeine, but wouldn’t the cocoa naturally contain caffeine? I’m nervous to take recover after an evening workout. Super sensitive to caffeine.
Hey Sarah! I totally get it! No one wants to be up all night because of caffeine!!
Since you’re doing an evening workout (and sensitive to caffeine), I would suggest Recharge if you can drink casein protein. It will help with muscle soreness and rebuilding your muscles after a workout! It also helps me sleep!
With that said, Beachbody discloses caffeine in everything -Cafe Latte Shakeology, Energize, Bevvy, etc – so I think if Plant Based Recover had it, they’d list it. You could always drink a sample-run in the morning and see how you do. They have a money-back guarantee, and you can drink it without working out – it’s just better after a workout….so the one time trial time wouldn’t hurt! Let me know what you think. :)
